Working Through Deflections

Have you ever tried to have a serious conversation with someone that continually avoided the topic that you were trying to address? If so, fear not for you are far from alone. As a coach, I continually work with people on deep personal growth topics that are of high value to the coachee. Even in this situation there are many people that struggle to stay on topic. I always find this amazing considering the topic that they come to coaching for is themselves – what could be more important to them!

What is a Deflection?

A deflection is simply a way to avoid discussing what really matters in a conversation. Often people that deflect conversation would be considered by outsiders to be quite jovial. When you approach them with a problem, comment or question they may happily respond with a silly and light hearted joke related to what you are presenting. Or they may smile at you and respond – how about them 49ers.

Whatever their response, deflection is the art of skillfully and ‘seemingly’ harmlessly shifting a topic from one of greater importance to one of relative unimportance. The result: often questions remain unanswered, progress remains stunted, and a conversation never gets beneath the surface.

Whats going on when people deflect?

While I’ve no formal education on the psychology behind why people deflect, I can speak from my experience in working with numerous people that ‘avoid’ certain topics like the plague. Often deflection is a sign that what you are bringing up is important, its unresolved, and it is a struggle for the person that is dealing with it. People that deflect feel more comfortable internalizing these struggles then speaking openly about them. For friends, family, and life coaches this provides a pretty significant challenge since a major building block for relationships either in social circles or professional ones is open and truthful communication. How does one support a family member or coach a client that constantly deflects conversation?

Seeing Deflections for what they are

When you are in a conversation and you are in the midst of ‘real life’ discussions, its rather difficult to notice a deflection if you are allowing the conversation to flow. Its easy to get caught up in the conversation particularly when the deflector is coaxing the conversation with pleasurable adages. Because of this, it is very important to see the deflection for what it is rather than to be caught up in the conversation. This is an act of raising consciousness and it takes practice. Often we’ll miss out on the deflection and think later – why didn’t I say something! Remember – it takes practice, the person using the deflection has likely mastered the skill over years or even decades, so you shouldn’t expect to be able to avoid all deflections just after reading one article on the topic.

Again – step 1, be conscious to what’s happening so you can act.

Deflections v. A Wandering Mind

Before moving on, I want to make a distinction between a person that is deflecting conversation and a person that has a wandering mind. When you are coaching, time is limited and time costs money. If you are outside the coaching realm and are simply having a conversation with someone, you may not be constrained by the limits of time so wandering conversation may not be detrimental. For coaches however, its important to notice deflections that steer you off topic as well as wandering discussions as they create a lack of focus that impedes on the clients ability to make progress during the time you have together. Here are the major difference between the two:

  • Deflections serve the purpose of deliberately steering the conversation off topic
  • Deflections are used as a way to hide what is really important to someone
  • Deflections are a sign that you are touching upon something that the person is uncomfortable with (and it may be hiding what needs to be discovered)
  • Wanderers have lots of ideas and often lack focus
  • Wanderers are happy to get back to the topic of focus, but really feel that its important to share ancillary information
  • Wanderers are not avoiding conversation, they will rather speak at length on important and unimportant topics.

Again, be conscious of both of these tendencies as either will steer you off topic, the methods for dealing with people that deflect however are much different than dealing with people who’s conversation wanders (fodder for a future blog article)

Strategies for moving past deflections

If you’d like to bring an end to the seemingly endless set of deflections your partner, friend, co-worker or client seem to throw at you, you’ll have to confront that individual the next time it happens. This can be difficult as I’ve found most people prefer not to be confrontational – even when the type of confrontation that I speak of is quite benign and can be done with compassion. Let me provide some examples.

Deflection Tactic – Shifting the Questions

Problem – In conversation you ask a person a serious question (perhaps about their desires for the future, goals, their vision), and they respond by asking you a question. One of my favorites was a client that would avoid questions by letting me know how great of a coach I was and she’d ask who my manager was so that she could pay kudos.

Strategy – Let them know you’d be happy to talk about that later. Right now you are interested in them. Ask the question again.

Deflection Tactic – Changing the Topic

Problem – You are speaking with a friend, co-worker, client etc and again you’ve got some important questions to ask. You’ve been trying to get a response on this topic for a while. When you ask, the response is a complete shift of topic with a light hearted overtone. Again a personal favorite of mine was a client that deflected to talking about the Minnesota Vikings no matter what the conversation we were having was related to.

Strategy – Confront them on what they are doing. What do you notice happens to our conversation each time that I bring up x,y,z? When given a question that confronts them on the act of what they are doing, it becomes very difficult to do more of the same (ie: my buddy above would have a tough time to ping me on whether I saw the Vikings game or not after asking that question!)

Deflection Tactic – The Joker

Problem – Each time you bring up an important topic ‘The Joker’ has a whitty simple and light hearted deflective joke as a response. They’ve often got a smile and make others smile around them – so they are a bit tougher to confront.

Stragety – Appeal to their kindness and refocus. One might say – that’s funny. I really appreciate your good nature and humor. Now if you don’t mind, this topic is really important to look at – talk to me about x,y,z.

Deflection Tactic – Excuses

Problem – You’ve tried to have a serious discussion with someone about a topic and every time you bring them up, rather than getting to the heart of the matter the deflector throws out excuses, they tell you their life story and they avoid what is important for you to discuss by saying we’ll get to that later.

Strategy – Listen, acknowledge and re-ask. The person that is avoiding a conversation by throwing out a number of excuses is overwhelmed and their priorities are not the same as yours. Typically they would be willing to have this conversation its just difficult for them to deal with what you are speaking about at this moment. They are letting you know indirectly that they need to be heard. They need support as well, so perhaps you can offer that support. Give them some space, let them vent, let them know you understand that things are difficult. Once you’ve allowed them to clear their thoughts, they may be willing to discuss the topic you are interested in discussing.

Before you engage in any such exercise, though, please consult with your physicist or doctor first to prevent any injury. Doing such exercises wrong can seriously damage your health.

Never forget that your diet is crucial! Lengthening your legs means increasing your height. As a consequence of doing the above exercises you will grow taller, which means that your body will undergo quite a change. Make sure you have a healthy and sound diet that provides your body with all kinds of nutrients. Your body will need it to stay healthy while going through the process.

8 Dirty Truths About Teaching Kids Yoga

Kids yoga classes are different from adult yoga classes. Before you decide to become a kids yoga instructor, or start doing yoga with your class at school, you’ll want to become familiar with these 8 dirty truths about teaching yoga to kids.

1. There will be tears – The trigger could be being overtired, or not getting to lead the game, or feeling overwhelmed, or that somebody ran into them during Yoga Tag, or they are frustrated at not being able to do their favourite pose precisely when they wanted. Tears are part and parcel of kids learning about their emotions and how to handle life. After school yoga classes are especially prone to this response as kids have already put in a full day of learning, may not have had an adequate after school snack (low-blood sugar often causes emotional melt-downs), or may simply need a little TLC whereas the rest of the class wants to burn off excess energy.

2. Classes are noisy – Laughter, chatting, roaring, barking, singing, energetic chanting and more are part of a yoga class for kids. Once a Grade 5 teacher asked me how to get her students to be quiet during yoga. My response: “Don’t.” Kids need to express themselves using all their senses and they will at every opportunity. I believe that happy noise is productive to learning. One rule, however, when the instructor talks everyone else listens. That way explanations and instruction can be given, and then activities can be fully interactive. So have fun, make some noise!

3. You will be interrupted – Imagine half the adults in your yoga class expressing out loud the first thought that comes to mind every time the teacher begins to explain a pose or activity. Imagine being half way through a story only to be asked, “Can I go to the bathroom?” Imagine hearing all about someone’s fish that died on the weekend, a favourite TV show, the type of cake that was served at a friend’s birthday party, or the nasty comment that Mommy said to Daddy when he came home late from work…again. Now you are at a kids yoga class.

4. Classroom management is an essential skill – You will need to possess some classroom management skills to keep Bobby from constantly playing with the gong, Sue from cuddling with her best friend, Joey on task, and Beth from using her yoga mat like a sled. Kids generally know how to behave but will take advantage of any opportunity for chaos. Every kids yoga instructor needs to find their own style of classroom management so that the environment stays conducive to learning and growth. Remember you are in charge.

5. When you mess up, you’ll be told – Adults are generally rather polite when instructors make minor mistakes, stumble over their words, or fall flat on their faces. Kids – not so much! They love pointing out your shortcomings, faux pas, and inconsistencies. Instructors have two options: 1) achieve perfection 2) develop a sense of humour. Since perfection is a far way off for me, I find laughing about my blunders a lot more fun. In addition, the way in which adults respond to error helps kids to see how to handle their own mistakes in positive, life affirming ways.

6. Classes are similar to herding cats – Each group has a variety of ages, physical, mental and emotional abilities, and maturity levels. Add to that the fact that kids’ attention spans can be measured in minutes and you have an interesting challenge on your hands. Establishing a class routine and making sure the themes are kid friendly will lengthen the amount of time kids will spend on any one given activity. Kids yoga instructors, however, had better always have a few fall back activities & yoga games in mind to keep everyone engaged and having fun.

7. It’s not about you – Kids love classes which focus on THEIR interests. WebKinz, Hannah Montana, Star Wars, Creepy Crawlies, Princesses, Spiderman, and more all come to yoga class. When the instructor incorporates a yoga inspired activity which plays off the students’ favourite things then you know you’ve got a great thing going. As well, each holiday from Valentine’s to Halloween provides fodder for fun. So don’t be surprised if you spend time wondering how to incorporate leprechauns or superheros into your next yoga class.

8. Props, props, & more props – For an adult yoga class most instructors use a mat, an mp3 player, and if you are lucky an eye pillow. Iyengar classes will add a strap, a block, a blanket, and possibly a chair. For any given kids yoga class, take that basic list and add books, puppets, feathers, scarves, pompoms, parachutes, stuffed animals, musical instruments, hula hoops, card decks, hoberman spheres, rocks, balls, bean bags, craft supplies, colouring sheets, and more. Be sure to have some storage space available.

So there you have it: the inconveniences, traumas & reality of teaching yoga to kids.

There is a flip side however. If you take pleasure in providing tools for kids to be happy and healthy the rest of their lives, enjoy genuine sharing, approach life with curiosity and creativity, want to end each class with a sense of satisfaction, and love to receive spontaneous hugs, then teaching yoga to kids is for you.

Someone Supporting Me

I’ve had dreams in my life. And I’ve had dreams fall through. Do you know the difference between the two comes down to someone supporting you.

None of us can go it alone, no matter how hard we try or how strong. We all have moments of weakness and doubt when all we can think about is we want to get out.

And during those times when we are weakest and our world is falling apart, it’s the support of a friend or someone who understands that pulls us out.

If you think about the tragedies of life and having to restart again and again, it’s always the same old plight, and we lose the support of family and friends. The more people who pull away, the fewer hands to reach in and help us get through the day. And a person’s world falls apart. We call it tough love and teach classes about how to start.

But the reality is, when someone finally reaches in, that’s when you finally see the fresh start begin. A homeless person, a recovering addict, a financial crisis – then someone says – I love you just the way you are – and suddenly there’s new hope and a fresh start.

Without loving support we can’t do or be anything. To truly live, we all sometimes need a fresh start and a helping hand reaching in gives us the courage for that start.

A few years ago, I got divorced. I was devastated. My whole world fell apart. I felt like I had failed as a woman and a wife. My family had just fallen apart. And my extended family and friends had the attitude of ‘so what, just make a fresh start’ but for me it seemed the end. I had let down God and myself and couldn’t image starting over again.

It’s taken a lot of years to heal, but I finally have that fresh start. Through the loving support of friends, I’m finally becoming able to dream again.

We can’t dream or live on our own. We need right support and encouragement. When family and friends can’t offer that, you have to look for the people who can. Step by step, little by little, you learn to live – supported – again.

If you need support, you’re normal. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are weak or foolish for it. Find the support you need and believe!

Relationship Between Cod Liver Oil and Constipation Explained

The relationship between cod liver oil and constipation is one of natural treatment and ailment. In other words, cod liver oil has been used to provide natural relief from constipation for many years. Other fish oils provide the same benefit, without the risks that can be associated with excess consumption of cod liver oil. Both of these oils provide essential omega-3 fatty acids, necessary for optimal brain, heart, joint and digestive function.

Both my parents and my grandparents took regular doses of cod liver oil and constipation was not a problem for them. After complaining of a “tummy ache”, my mother gave me a spoonful of the nasty tasting, smelly stuff. After that, I kept my tummy aches to myself. Sure, it relieved the constipation, but “Yuck!” I could taste it for hours, every time I burped!

Today, the better fish oil supplements are molecularly distilled to remove the odor. In capsule form, they are tasteless. Storing the capsules in the freezer and/or taking them with food can prevent both the burping and any aftertaste, while still relieving occasional constipation.

Most people experience constipation occasionally. Too little fiber in the diet is one common cause, as is too little water. But, many other factors can contribute to occasional constipation. Prescription medications, dietary supplements containing iron, a sedentary lifestyle, traveling or other changes in routine and stress are some of the many things that can lead to constipation.

Excessive use of stimulant laxatives can cause the eventual dysfunction of the digestive muscles, leading to chronic constipation. Most people find that even occasional use of stimulant laxatives can cause cramping and discomfort. Fish oils improve digestive function, can be taken regularly and are “gentler” than most over-the-counter laxatives, like Ex-Lax. Many people relate cod liver oil and constipation prevention.

Just remember to choose wisely. All supplements are not the same. Cod liver oils contain vitamin A. Pregnant women should avoid supplements containing vitamin A, as it has been associated with a significant increase in birth defects. Too much vitamin A, in even healthy adults can be toxic. In general, it is safer to get your daily vitamin A requirements from food or beta carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A on an as-needed basis and is therefore non-toxic.

Other concerns over cod liver oil consumption are related to mercury contamination and contamination from other industrial pollutants. Mercury is stored in the livers of fish. Thus, there is a greater chance of mercury contamination in oils that come from fish livers. The source of most cod liver oils is the Atlantic Cod fish, which has been over harvested and swims in some of the most polluted waters in the world.

Fish oils derived from the “flesh” of the fish are generally safer alternatives. But, it is still necessary to choose carefully. Some oils are not molecularly distilled and contain mercury and other contaminants. And, if you are concerned about environmental issues, some fish are over harvested and their populations are not considered sustainable. Manufacturers should list the “source fish” (cod, shark, salmon, etc.), the distillation process used and the ocean from which the fish is harvested, but most do not.

Be Purposeful

Who you are is dependent on a lot of factors that we don’t often consider. Who are you beyond your name? Every day we make decisions that shape who we are. Who have you become, who are you becoming? Who are you…really?

If I were to ask you that simple question, how would you respond? If you are like most people, you would state your name. Since your name is most often the way people are identified and distinguished from other people, that would be a reasonable response. For someone who knew you to some degree a name might be enough to solicit an image and recall an impression about you. However, let me challenge you to consider some not so common thinking.

If I said, your name is only what people call you. What if you name was changed? This might have happened as a result of an adoption or your mother getting remarried. People have changed their name to Americanize it, to facilitate blending into our culture. People have changed their name just to be different or to stand out. If your name was changed today for some reason, you would still be the same person with the same other characteristics. We would just call you something else.

So, If I said, “Your name is just what people call you, who are you really,” what would you say? You might say that you are a mother, father, sister, uncle, grandson, or friend of so-and-so. These are certainly designations other people could also claim. You might say that you are my neighbor. However, if you or I moved, you would still be you, even though you were no longer my neighbor. Maybe you would say that you are an American. Well, there are a lot of us who are American, it would not be who you are, it would only designate your nationality. Then, you might say I am a Floridian or a Christian or a home maker or a store manager or a teacher. People typically move several times and change professions three or four times in their life, and sometimes change religions. When these things occur, are they a different person? Where you live, your religion, where you grew up or where you live, which organizations or clubs you belong to, are not sufficient to tell us who you really are. These designations would not be unique to you and would not be who you are as an individual.

So, we are still left with, “Who are you…really.” You are not your name, nationality, religion, profession, etc. Although you may have a clear sense of identity, it may be a challenge to convey your individuality.

Is who you are what you have done? You could go through a long list of things you have done, such as that you are a graduate of this high school or that college, that you became certified or licensed as this or that, that you raised this many kids, or that you have traveled to these places. What you have done, has been done by others as well. Doing something in particular is rarely specific to you.

Here is another way of looking at who you are. You are the sum of your decisions. You were provided with some circumstance and resources (genetics, family of origin, etc.), but who you become depends on your decisions. You come to develop a view of the world and a view of yourself that guide you through life. You develop values that guide your perceptions, emotions, attitude, decisions, and actions. These we collectively call character and personality, which impact on your interactions with other people and ultimately shape your relationships. How you interact and your relationships determine the places that life takes you, what you accomplish, and who you come to be. Your relationships with your family or origin, class mates, friends, spouses, children, co-workers, club members, neighbors, customers, and clients determine who you are. Our relationships with other people determine who we become and how things turn out for us.

Your perspectives and values lay the groundwork, your experiences and decisions build the foundation, and your behavior constructs an impression other people have of you – they become who you are. Little decisions day after day, all day long, and big decisions when they occur, make us who we are. Satisfaction with yourself and life in general depends on your decisions. Take some time to think about how you got from where you were to where you are. Be aware of the decisions that you make that will determine where you will be when you get where you are going. Your values and goals are the compass and path that move you along toward who you become. Be purposeful in making your decisions and be mindful of who you are.

You don’t have to worry about balance or skinned knees or anything you may have worried about on your two-wheeler. You do, however, have to worry about people wanting to borrow your tricycle.

Before we look into different types of entertainment, first let’s define what entertainment is. Entertainment is any kind of activity that provides amusement for people in a passive way, other entertaining activities that involve participating are considered recreation or hobbies.

There are many types of entertainment for particular tastes, for example we have cinema, theatre, sports, games, social dance, concert, comedy shows, animations, impressionists, clowns and the list goes on and on.

These form of entertainment can than be divided into groups according to the age and interest of the people being entertained. For instance we have child , adult , live action , public and corporate entertainment. In this article we’ll give a brief explanation to some of these forms.

When you walk around any major city around Europe you will notice a wide range of public entertainers working for any amount of money the public decides to give them. There are public entertainers of all sorts from mimes to Peruvian Flute bands all working with the uncertainty of how much money they will make, that is why they tend to be more common in major cities where there are more tourists.
